Blood Pressure Medication Causing Cancer?

The risk of taking blood pressure medication

Are you on blood pressure medications? If you are, you’re in very good company. There are millions of Americans taking blood pressure medication. A very common one is Losartan.

There’s been an investigation going on for years with the drug, but with the recent exposure of Zantac, a popular antacid, having a cancer risk, it once again surfaced that Losartan, and similar blood pressure medications, have been linked to cancer for the exact same reason. A chemical called NDMA is an impurity found in the drug creating a cancer risk.

The cancer-causing chemical is not from manufacturing

The research I did found it not to be a manufacturing issue. So it’s not something that’s coming in on the line of making the drug, but rather, it’s inherent within the drug itself.

NDMA is a known human carcinogen.

What should you do?

Obviously you don’t just stop your blood pressure medication because we can’t have you having a stroke. For a short time, you can be placed on a different drug. But ultimately the goal would be to get to the root cause of what’s driving your high blood pressure and address that.

Here at Root Cause, we find it quite easy to wean patients off their blood pressure medications once we’ve addressed the underlying cause.

I know it’s not very easy, but try to find a clinician that understands how to address the root cause of why you have high blood pressure. If you can’t find someone local to you, we are often able to work with you long distance.

Is high blood pressure reversible?

The good news is Yes! In fact, it’s an example I often use with new patients when I meet them when I’m making the distinction of how our clinic works versus how conventional medicine clinics work.

I always use this example: If a new patient came in with very high blood pressure that they didn’t know they had, we would actually take that same first step that any conventional medicine clinic would, which is we’d put them on a blood pressure medication.

What’s very different however is what then follows. Conventional medicine says, “Since that drug lowered your blood pressure, keep taking it. You’ll probably be on it for the rest of your life.” Despite side effects of kidney damage, et cetera. And now we know, linked to cancer, their recommendation is typically a lifetime of the drug.

We on the other hand say, “Okay, now we got you out of the danger zone. Now let’s get to work. What’s been driving that blood pressure to elevate?” And when we get to that root cause, we’re able to wean the person off their medication because they literally no longer need it. They don’t have high blood pressure anymore.

All drugs have side effects, but this is a known carcinogenic contaminant

That natural solution is available. I want you to know that’s available because all drugs have side effects.

What’s so frustrating about this cancer-risk is that these drugs are not new. We have a healthy skepticism of new drugs, but when a drug’s “been around forever”, you would hope anything bad about it would have been revealed.

Zantac and Losartan have been on the market for decades. The FDA has been quietly looking into them, but a little too quiet in my opinion. They’ve been investigating NDMA as a contaminant in these drugs for a very long time.

There’s too much cancer in our society

I think we are all sick and tired of cancer and how many loved ones we know that are getting it. But imagine causing it unwittingly by taking a medication that’s very easy to be weaned off of with the correct approach.

That’s what we do here at Root Cause. We’re very good at getting our patients off blood pressure medication because finding the underlying root cause is not difficult. Yes, there are dietary components, there are immune system components and there can be toxicity issues.

It’s an inflammatory condition. When your blood vessels are narrowing and pumping up at a higher volume, there’s a source of inflammation there. What is it? There’s a myriad of reasons. It’s unique to you or you’re loved but that doesn’t make it difficult to isolate.

What should you do?

I know you want me to tell you the one thing causing high blood pressure, but there isn’t one thing that’s true for everyone.

What needs to be identified is what is the root cause for you, and specifically. Testing allows us to identify that. The point is that the root cause for elevated blood pressure is not a simple answer that the same for everyone, like “just eat less salt”. It is true that some people are salt sensitive, but many aren’t.

Others have high blood pressure and it has nothing to do with their salt ingestion. And since we’re on the topic, it’s pretty easy to figure out if you’re salt-sensitive; eat less salt and see if your blood pressure goes down. If it doesn’t affect it then salt isn’t the root cause of the problem, but something is. There is always a root cause; always a reason.

We need to tread carefully when taking medications

The learning lesson of this is that we can never assume that taking a drug is a safe choice. It may be an only choice at times, but never forget that all drugs have side effects. They’ve always had side effects and now we’re learning about new problems.

Cancer incidence is increasing almost daily and we’re finding out more and more things that are creating this increased cancer risk. Certainly when it comes to blood pressure medication, and as I mentioned earlier antacids such as Zantac, we very much have options to remove such drugs from our lives.
