Have you heard that soy is dangerous? Have you heard that it can cause cancer? Have you heard that young men shouldn’t consume soy because it can feminize them? This is completely false, and I know it’s all over the internet. I’ve definitely written blogs on this before. This is Dr. Vikki Petersen, and I feel like we have to keep talking about it because soy has so many benefits.
It’s not a natural food that we eat here in the United States, unlike in Asia where tempeh and tofu are more integral parts of their diet. It’s true, soy can definitely get a bad name because crops here in the US are often glyphosate-laden, which is awful. So, do understand I’m talking about organic soy, first of all.
The bioactive part of soy, genistein, is fabulous for helping starve cancer. We all have cancer cells, but they’re basically inactive until they get a blood supply. Once they get a blood supply, they can spread very dramatically and quickly. Genistein is known to starve that blood supply, so the cancer can’t take off. A cell here, a cell there—it’s not going to do anything to you. It’s a phytoestrogen, which is a plant estrogen, but when you look at the phytoestrogen in soy compared to human estrogen, the chemicals look nothing alike and they don’t act alike. The phytoestrogen from soy inhibits human estrogen in terms of binding sites, making it very protective.
That’s the point I want to get across: the phytoestrogen in organic soy is highly protective against cancer. A large epidemiological study in Japan involving over 5,000 women with breast cancer found that those consuming adequate amounts of soy—just ten milligrams, which is about the amount found in a cup of soy milk—had a 29% decreased risk of death. Remember, these women already had breast cancer. For those who had their cancer surgically removed, there was a 32% decreased risk of it returning.
Countries that consume a decent amount of soy tend to naturally have lower incidences of cancer, particularly breast cancer, but generally speaking, lower incidences of cancer. This is due to genistein, the bioactive found in soy. There are bioactives found in many different foods, and I’ll be doing videos on other foods as they come up. I’ve been trying to educate people about this for several years now, but patient after patient comes in and says, “I don’t eat soy because I know how dangerous it is,” and “I don’t feed soy to my children because I know how dangerous it is.” From an organic standpoint, soy is not dangerous—it’s actually healthy.
Fermented soy products like tempeh, shoyu, and natto are beneficial. I’ve never tasted natto, and if you’ve listened to my videos, you know I’ve heard it’s awful, but others tell me it’s delicious. It’s a fermented aspect of soy, as is soy sauce and shoyu. If you’re gluten intolerant, you can get soy sauce without wheat. There’s also tempeh and tofu. Fermented is better, but if you can’t tolerate that, try the unfermented. We’re only talking about ten milligrams as a minimum dose to help prevent cancer cells from gaining a blood supply, effectively starving them.
