Neuromuscular Re-education

Neuromuscular Re-education

When you have an injury or chronic stress, you become accustomed to compensating for the problem. These compensatory patterns in your movements, if left uncorrected, lead to muscular tension, restricted movement, and, in some cases, joint degeneration and debilitating pain.

Neuromuscular Re-education (NMR) helps correct these faulty patterns of movement by addressing problems within muscles, ligaments and tendons. Injuries and chronic tension can cause a progressive thickening of the fascia (connective tissue) that surrounds your muscles and joints. This thickening can cause muscles and other tissues to bind to each other (adhesions), preventing them from working correctly.

Adhesions form whenever damage and prolonged inflammation have occurred. They limit both strength and range of motion. Patients experience these adhesions as fibrous, knotty areas that create tension and pain. Tense and rigid muscles can also impinge on nerves, cause ischemia (reduced blood flow), and produce chronic pain and muscular fatigue.

Neuromuscular Re-education is a hands-on technique for treatment of soft tissue injuries that occur via trauma, repetitive motion, or chronic postural stress. It takes the muscle through a range of motion while using manual pressure to break up any adhesions and restore full range of motion. This allows the body to regain its normal movement, thus decreasing pain and improving function.
